Our story

West African — West-African Food Stall in Camden

Our story

Bringing the taste of home to your doorstep

For almost 40 years, we’ve lived in the diaspora — carrying with us the flavours, traditions and memories of home. Yet finding authentic African food at fair prices was often harder than it should have been. So we created Odogwu Foods to change that.

Because African food is more than food. It is culture. It is family. It is memory. It is home.

  • Rooted in Nigerian and Cameroonian heritage
  • Authentic foods from across Africa and the Afro-Caribbean community
  • From Nottingham to your doorstep, and across the UK

Why Odogwu Foods?

For almost 40 years, I have called the diaspora home.

Like so many Africans who have built lives away from the continent, I have carried home with me: the food, the flavours, the aromas, the memories and the deep comfort that comes with them.

But there was always one challenge. Finding authentic African food was never as easy as it should have been.

Sometimes the products we wanted were hard to find. Sometimes they were available but far too expensive. Sometimes the quality simply did not taste like what we remembered from home.

And sometimes, finding one particular ingredient meant travelling miles, visiting several shops or calling friends and family for help.

That experience stayed with me. So we asked a simple question: why shouldn’t African families in the diaspora have easy access to the food they grew up with?

That question became the beginning of Odogwu Foods.

Bringing the taste of home closer

Odogwu Foods was created with a clear purpose: to make authentic African food easier to find, easier to buy and more affordable for families living in the diaspora.

We began by looking beyond the usual supply chains and building relationships with producers, suppliers and trusted partners across Africa and beyond.

Our goal is to bring together the foods people know, love and miss — from Nigeria and across Africa and the Afro-Caribbean community — and make them available in one place.

From everyday staples to the ingredients that bring a traditional family meal to life, Odogwu Foods is here to help you find a little piece of home, wherever you are.

Rooted in Nigeria. Open to Africa.

Odogwu Foods has strong Nigerian roots. Our founder is Nigerian/Cameroonian, and that heritage naturally shapes the foods we source, the standards we set and the way we understand the central role food plays in African family life.

But Odogwu Foods is bigger than one country.

Africa is rich with different cultures, languages, traditions and cuisines. We want Odogwu Foods to honour that richness and celebrate the many ways African food brings people together.

Our vision is to bring authentic foods from across Africa and the Afro-Caribbean community into one welcoming space, while representing every culture and tradition with care and respect.

Nigerian at heart. African by heritage. Open to everyone.

What does the name “Odogwu Foods” mean?

The name Odogwu Foods draws on an Igbo word associated with strength, courage, resilience and distinction.

For us, it represents much more than a name. It speaks to the strength of African people who have built lives across the world while continuing to carry their heritage with pride.

It represents the parents who still cook the meals they grew up eating. The families determined to give their children a taste of home. The students, workers and communities who may live thousands of miles from Africa but remain connected through food.

And it represents our own journey — from Africans in the diaspora searching for authentic food to creating a way to make those foods more accessible to others.

Why Nottingham?

Odogwu Foods was born from our experience of life in the diaspora, but Nottingham became an important part of our story.

Nottingham is home to people from many backgrounds, cultures and communities. We saw an opportunity to build something that could serve the local African and Afro-Caribbean community while reaching families across the UK.

But our ambition does not stop at Nottingham. Through our online shop and delivery service, we are making authentic African groceries accessible to families wherever they live in the UK.

From Nottingham to your doorstep.

Authenticity matters

African food is more than food. It carries memory.

The smell of palm oil warming in the kitchen. The taste of properly made gari. The ingredients your mother or grandmother used. The meal shared around a family table. The familiar flavour that takes you straight back home.

That is why authenticity matters to us. We are not here simply to fill shelves with products labelled “African”. We want to know where our products come from, work with trusted suppliers and keep growing our range so our customers can find the foods that truly belong in their kitchens.

Because when someone buys an African food product, they may be buying much more than an ingredient. They are buying a memory.

Why trust Odogwu Foods?

Because we understand the customer. We are not outsiders treating African food as a trend. We are part of the diaspora ourselves.

We know what it feels like to search for the right product. We understand the difference between something that is merely available and something that genuinely tastes like home.

That lived experience shapes how we source, what we stock and how we serve our customers.

We are building Odogwu Foods for the communities we come from — with fair pricing, carefully selected products and a genuine commitment to making African food more accessible.

Our promise

We may have left Africa, but Africa never left us.

Odogwu Foods is our way of bringing that connection closer — to your kitchen, your family and your doorstep.

Whether you are Nigerian, Cameroonian, Ghanaian, Congolese, Sierra Leonean, Liberian, Caribbean or simply someone who loves African food, there is a place for you at Odogwu Foods.

We are building more than an African grocery shop. We are creating a destination for authentic African and Afro-Caribbean food — a place where heritage meets convenience, quality meets affordability and every product has the power to bring a little taste of home back to the table.

    Egusi soup with pumpkin leaves

Ground melon seed thickens into something rich and nutty. Ugu goes in at the very end so it keeps its bite and its colour.

Smoky, deeply savoury and worth the argument. The base is a slow-cooked pepper stew — rush it and you get orange rice, not jollof.
